Adolescent Years Is The Hardest For Most Of Our Society

Adolescent years is the hardest for most of our society. You always hear adults complaining about this age group (12-18 years of age). After studying more about why adolescents are stereo typed, has shown to me that there are emotion, physical, mental changes that happen during this time in a person’s life. Going through the adolescent stage of life is difficult and many cope in different ways as they go through these changes in their lives. Hannah Hardy is a 17 year old female adolescent. She is a Junior at Taylorsville High School and is on the track and tennis team. Hannah and her family have been a family friend for a couple years now. I have not been able to get to know Hannah as well, so I chose her to do an hour interview at her house. Hannah is not like everyone her age and is very mature. I decided to focus on identity, peer group, and family aspects of an adolescent by asking Hannah different questions that I came up with. I hoped to learn about other views of being a teenager than my own experience from when I was in my adolescent years. Various Relationships Presented in â€Å"Sir Gawain and the Green Knight† â€Å"Sir Gawain and the Green Knight† is an excellent work to reference when examining different relationships within Arthurian legends. The author of â€Å"Sir Gawain and the Green Knight† is unknown, but he is sometimes referred to as the â€Å"Gawain Poet† or â€Å"Pearl Poet† because of his additional works: â€Å"Pearl,† â€Å"Purity,† and â€Å"Patience.† All four poems were part of the Alliterative Revival of the Middle Ages of Northern England, containing mostly religious content. There are two main characters that fit this definition. Winston Smith and his lover Julia. However he keeps a diary which he writes about the true history and his personal feelings about the order. His rebel against the Party started after the note he received from Julia. In the note Julia wrote â€Å"I love you† to him. Afterwards they started to see each other which was restricted by the government because he was still married. He was interested in old staff this is how he found the room which he spent time with Julia. He always had questions about existing of rebellion and the big brother. Basically he did not have the love for his government inside him. Because he was willing to become free. Freedom in his definition was simple as saying â€Å"two plus two is equal to four†. But what he was doing by keeping this diary and have an idea about freedom was thought crime and he had to keep low profile. After he met with O’Brien and received the book â€Å"The Theory and Practice of Oligarchical Collectivism† which is written by Emanuel Goldstein from O’Brien his started to believe that the rebellion is really exists. He read the book with Julia and tried make her believe what he believes. However Julia was not that interested in the book. She looked like interested because of her love for Winston. Winston also had feeling for Julia but the was even more interesting than his love for Julia. Julia was born and grew up in the era of the Party. She does not know what was there before it. She is not rebellious because of the order her rebellious nature is caused by her adolescent desire to cause trouble for authority. She likes to act against the Party and yet gets an excitement from not to caught. She believes that although the precautions which the Party has these are not enough to stop her, since she is very careful and quick on hiding her actions. She thinks that because of her physical appearance her role as a pretty woman with dark hair is to not worry about the outcomes of her life style. She does anything she wishes if it is possible because that makes her feel like doing the right and good thing. The main example of Julia acting against the Party rules is her affair with Winston. While Julia started having an affair with Winston, she could manage to maintain this relationship for a couple of months and they did not get caught within this period. They have succeeded not to get caught because they used some simple yet useful ways. At their first meeting they were in the woods where nobody can see them. Afterwards they started to see each other at the rom which Winston rented. The room was safe for them to meet because there was no telescreens and microphones. The other way which keeps them safe was the routes they used while going to the room. They always used different routes and never get in or out from the room at the same time. These ways make Julia think like she has a freedom and the idea that she can do whatever she wants to. The government of 1984 has almost perfect control over the illegal actions of its citizens. Reaching that kind of accomplishment against the party encouraged her. Eighty-five percent of the population of Oceania was proletarian and Julia’s actions might awaken them against the government. In conclusion both of Julia’s and Winston’s rebel was failure. The room which Winston rented has telescreen and microphone. Their entire act against the government was seen by the authorities. At their final meeting at the room they get caught by the thought police. During the time when Winston was being kept as a prisoner at the Ministry of Love he found out that O’Brien was working for the government. They have torched Winston for months to erase his memories about the rebellion. Afterwards they had accomplished their goal and changed Winston’s attitude against the government. However his love against Julia was not that easy to erase. At the last part of the torches they had finally succeeded to break his love. At this event O’Brien put a mast on Winston’s face which has rats in it and Winston could not fight against them anymore. He bagged for them to give Julia to the rats not him. However at this part I remembered the part when Julia told Winston that they can torcher him and make him say anything but they cannot change his ideas. People and societies throughout the ages have been trying to answer the problem of putting the value of life into terms of dollar bills. The ancient Egyptians buried their dead with all of their worldly belongings. They believed a persons monetary worth on Earth was over, and they should take all of that earthly worth with them to the afterlife. Modern day Americans are different from the Egyptians. Today people believe that the families of the dead should be compensated for their loss. It is true that life is a precious commodity much like a diamond. But unlike a diamond, life has no set monetary value. But todays government is trying to change that. After the tragedies of September 11, 2002, the federal government started a federal fund to help the victims and families of victims of the attacks. This fund would give priority to people who were injured in the attacks, then to the spouse, and then to the parents. Sounds great doesnt it? Your husband dies and now you just lost your income, and the government is going to pay you for your loss. Well dont jump on the bandwagon so fast now. This might sound great now, but once you are knee deep in the program, it wont be so fun. To figure out how much money a person will receive from this fund is determined by a multi-step process. First they figure out how much an individual would have earned had there been no attacks. This would mean that a bankers family would earn far more than the family of a janitor in the building s. Is it true that a banker is worth more to society than a janitor? Is a lawyer more important than a desk clerk? Then the fund adds $250,000 as a base cover, and then another $50,000 for a spouse and each child (Ripley 12). This would imply that a married man who has 6 kids in more important than a married man with no children at all. Is it more important in society to make babies than it is to just live your life? What about people who havent yet had a chance to start a family because their lives were cut so short? Now all that money sounds like a blessing, doesnt it? Well now that you have your foundation money, now you have to subtract the money you get from life insurance, pension, Social Security death benefits, and workers compensation. After these little subtractions, you now have the total that you are going to receive from the governments fund. Now you are going to be hit with new questions after all this, for example is a rich man with high life insurance, high pension, and no children worth less than a poor man with no life insurance, no job, and ten children (Ripley 13)? The answer to all these questions is no. The lives of all people should be valued at the same price, if you are to set a price at all. A rich man should be the same as a poor man; a woman with no children should have the same life value as a woman with seven kids. The point is that if the government is going to put a monetary value of a human life, than it should be the same for everyone. We hold these truths to self-evidence: that all men are created equal (King Jr.). There are many arguments against putting a money value on human life and two of the most impressive come from Alephonsion Deng and Lance Armstrong. Alephonsion Deng is one of the Sudanese Lost Boys. We crossed a thousand miles of war ravaged country without the hope of sanctuary. Bullets replaced food, medicine, shelter and my loving parents. I lived on wild vegetable, ate mud from Mother Earth, and drank urine from my own body (Deng 16). He had to walk across an entire country from refugee camp to refugee camp, always with the thought of death behind him. He didnt have the luxury of being able to go down to the grocery store when he ran out of food. He had to scavenge for what ever he could get his hands on. If Mr. Deng was asked about the governments 9/11 victims fund, which is set to put a monetary value on life, he would probably be outraged. After what he had been through he would probably say that it is impossible to turn something as valuable as life into terms of money. Lance Armstrong survived a long battle with cancer, and after this battle came out with a new outlook on life. When I was 25, I got testicular cancer and nearly died. I was given less than a 40 percent chance of surviving, and frankly, some of my doctors were just being kind when they gave me those odds (Armstrong 1). Before having the ordeal with cancer his out look on life was just live it fast, everything was fast for him. After surviving the unbeatable he came out with a brand new outlook on his value of life. He now preached that life can end very quickly and that everyone should live their lives to the fullest terms possible. If someone asked Lance Armstrong about the government trying to put life into terms of dollars, bills, he would have a heart attack. Much like Mr. Deng, he would think that life is precious and the government should not demean it by trying to bring money into the same picture frame as life. Should life be put into monetary values? The answer is no. Life is way too precious of a commodity to put into terms of money. People who have been on the brink of death would all say that you cannot put a value on the natural high that is known as life. To go back to an earlier metaphor, life truly is like the most precious and valuable of gems. They are similar in rareness and beauty, but are different in the fact that gems have a set money value, but life is a lot more stupendous than any gem on Earth. To be, or not to be-that is the question: that is his main issue throughout the entire play. He pretty much loses everything that means anything to him in his life so he cant help but wonder if there is even a point anymore. Anything he truly valued, such as his father and Ophelia, was taken from him. He has nothing to value so why should he question the value of life? Life has many hardships no matter who you are, even if you are Hamlet. It still has a value to it. It teaches you to value you what you have because you never know when or they may not be there. Lance Armstrong is a whole different story. He looks at life in such a positive perspective now unlike before. Unlike many people, he was given a second chance to live his life. He values every single thing because he never knows when it will be his time to go. He was luck the first time but no one know if he will be next time, if there is a next time. He learned the hard way not to take life for granted but to take advantage of it and live everyday as though it were your last. Not everyone is as lucky as Lance Armstrong. He now realizes how valuable his life and everyone in it is but thats because he was given a second chance. There are so many people out there who wish they would have realized how valuable everything was before it was too late because they didnt get that second chance. We may not realize it until it happens but when we or a loved one goes through suffering or illness it truly impacts how we value life. It makes us face the reality that not everyday is guaranteed and people will not stay with us forever no matter how much we wish they would. I think, as a society, we should value life not by how much money we have or how much we are worth but by how much we enjoy life and everyone in it. It shouldnt take the death of a loved one for us to realize everyday is valuable. We should wake up everyday realizing its a new day and be thankful for it. Im not saying to wake up and say today might be my last but realize it, embrace it. Take nothing fro granted and live everyday to its fullest. If you love someone then tell them. If you want to start a business then do what it take to start one. Do whatever you have to so that when you leave this world you are happy with who you are and what you accomplished. Dont expect to have no regrets or make no mistakes because those are what helped to form you to the person you become over time. Heart of Darkness Heart of Darkness, by Joseph Conrad is a fictional novel with an overflow of symbolism. Throughout the entire novel Conrad uses a plethora of simple colors, objects, and places in order to clarify very complex meanings. By doing this, Conrad is able to lure the reader into a world unlike his or her own: the Congo River, located in central Africa. Although the interpretation of these symbols is so elaborate, the simplicity of each makes it somewhat easy to overlook. A few examples of the many symbols found in Conrad’s novel include the jungle, as well as the colors of white and black, better known as the colors of life and death. In Heart of Darkness, the images of black and white have the usual connotations of evil and good. These pigments are found throughout the entire book. Ironically, although black, the native Africans seem to represent a sort of good by doing what they feel is right. On the other hand, the white foreigners carry themselves with some kind of evil as they exploit the great kindness of the blacks. I guess you could say that the white men were filled with a black hatred inside. Another example is found when Marlow enters the Belgian company’s office. Sitting in the office are two women dressed almost completely in black. Marlow is no beginning to understand the seriousness of the journey he is going to make. Even his predecessor dies because of a quarrel over two black hens. The usage of black is almost too much to handle. Another example that I also remembered from the movie was how Kurtz’s pictures were always placed within a dark ebony back round. Another ironic example is the continued description of the white ivory. Its beautiful white shine makes it look righteous, even though it really demonstrates a great evil as the elephants were being destroyed along with other people. Other colors were of importance as well to truly understand the symbolic nature of the story. The plaid patches and trimmings on the Russian’s harlequin clothes portray his ever-changing moods and foolish, light-hearted behavior. By simply using a description of clothing, Conrad is able to show us how he tends to stay out of trouble with his befriending nature. The color yellow will usually symbolize some sort of corruption or decay. We first read about yellow as it marks the area of Congo on the map in the Brussels office.
